New Hazards on Lake Mead

Lake Mead, near Las Vegas, is a popular place for boating and watercraft recreation with several full-service marinas. Before you put your boat in the water, be sure to get an insurance review from our agents at Red Rock Insurance in Las Vegas, NV. We can help with your boat/watercraft insurance needs.

History of Lake Mead

The completion of the Hoover Dam in 1935 created Lake Mead. It is the largest human-made water reservoir in the United States, with the capacity to hold over 28 million acre-feet of water. However, the current level is nowhere near that capacity.

Water Crisis

Climate change and the extended megadrought caused the water in Lake Mead to become extremely low. The current water level is approaching a historical record level. It is about ten feet lower than last year, at about 1,047 feet as of July 2026. Water rationing for downstream users is already underway.

The minimum level required for electric power generation by the Hoover Dam is 950 feet. If the water level gets that low, the power, much of it used by Las Vegas, will stop. The dead pool level is 895 feet, which is the level that turns off any water flow from the lake, affecting millions of people in Arizona, California, and Mexico who rely on this water.

Park Rangers Warn of Dangers

We want to caution you that you need to be careful to avoid new hazards as water levels change on Lake Mead. The low water level caused rocks to appear, as well as sunken boats, old automobiles, and even dead bodies stuffed in oil drums wrapped in chains. Some of the hazards are not visible and lie just below the water surface.

Watersports enthusiasts are warned to exercise caution when passing near the lake edge, as many new hazards lurk there that can wreck your boat or watercraft. Enjoy Lake Mead while you still can, but be careful.
